Game Brief

Thirteen Cards, also known as Luosong (羅宋), is a card game popular throughout the streets and alleys of Taiwan. It requires four players and is a game that emphasizes both deck-building skills and luck. After players receive 13 cards, they divide them into three hands: the Front Hand (3 cards), Middle Hand (5 cards), and Back Hand (5 cards). The Back Hand type must be greater than or equal to the Front Hand type. It is a casual game suitable for all ages.

Game Methods

In real life, Thirteen Cards requires four people to be seated before the game can proceed. However, in "iTaiwan ChinesePoker", a game can be started at any time without necessarily waiting for four players. At the start of the game, players take turns acting as the Dealer (in the game, the Dealer does not affect points or card comparison rules). After the Dealer cuts the deck, the dealing order is decided counter-clockwise based on the cut card's points, and then cards are dealt clockwise. After everyone receives 13 cards (including the computer), the card comparison begins. The detailed gameplay instructions are as follows:
  • When the four players have each received thirteen cards, players must arrange their cards into (Front Hand 3 cards, Middle Hand, Back Hand 5 cards). The three hands must comply with the rule that the Back Hand is greater than or equal to the Middle Hand, and the Middle Hand is greater than or equal to the Front Hand. Otherwise, it will result in Xiang Gong (相公) ; at this point, the computer will play for you and enter the comparison stage.
  • In "iTaiwan ChinesePoker", the determination of wins, losses, and points occurs after all players have decided on their hand arrangements. The hands are revealed for comparison. The four players compare (Front Hand vs Front Hand), (Middle Hand vs Middle Hand), and (Back Hand vs Back Hand) to establish three win/loss relationships and determine the outcome.

Hand Types and Rankings

In "iTaiwan ChinesePoker", there is no distinction between suits; it is purely a comparison of numbers. If both parties have the same hand type, the card numbers are compared. If the numbers are also the same, that specific comparison ends in a draw. The hand types and number rankings are as follows:

Hand Rankings

Dragon > Straight Flush > Four of a Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > Three of a Kind > Two Pairs > Pair > Scatter Cards

Number Rankings

A>K>Q>J>10>9>8>7>6>5>4>3>2

  • Three or five cards that do not form the specific hands below are called Wu Long (烏龍). If two hands are both Wu Long, their numbers are compared sequentially to determine the winner.
  • Pair (對子)
  • A hand consisting of two cards of the same number plus any three cards (or one card for the Front Hand). The number determines the rank of the Pair, e.g., A Pair > K Pair > Q Pair > ... > 3 Pair > 2 Pair. If the pair sizes are the same, the other cards are compared sequentially.
  • Two Pairs (兩對)
  • A hand consisting of two pairs plus any one card. Comparison: Compare the larger pair first, then the smaller pair. If both are the same, compare the remaining card.

  • Straight (順子)

  • Flush (同花)
  • A hand consisting of five cards of the same suit. If two hands are both Flushes, they are compared in the same way as Scatter Cards.
  • Full House (葫蘆)
  • A hand consisting of one Three of a Kind and one Pair. The Three of a Kind determines the size.
  • Four of a Kind (鐵支)

Scoring Method

At the start of the game, the Table Master (Opener) sets the points for each hand. After comparison in each round, the number of hands won or lost by each player is recorded, which serves as the basis for the points won or lost. (To ensure fairness, the computer will not record wins/losses).
Win one hand +1 Same hand position, greater than other players.
Lose one hand -1 Same hand position, smaller than other players.
Clash/Draw (強碰) +0 Same hand position, equal to other players.
